[WIP] Boruto Movie Novel Translations
Hi there, thanks for taking the time to check this out.
I am looking for assistance in understanding scenes, feats, etc. from the novelization of the Boruto movie.
I’m particularly interested in powerscaling the Naruto universe, and as such, I’d like to better understand terms related to the cosmology, e.g. world, universe, star, planet, etc.
Unfortunately, since I can barely read Japanese myself, I am not sure what pages these scenes are found on. I was able to find an English translation (by Cacatua). I included the sections I am interested in, along with context - hopefully, they will be relatively easy to find in the Japanese text, but if you need more information, please let me know.
Please locate the passages in the Japanese text, that correspond to the following English excerpts.
For each excerpt:
If Translation is requested, please provide:
a full transcription/transliteration of the original Japanese text
page numbers on which the original Japanese text can be found
Your personal English translation
If Insights are requested, please share your thoughts as a speaker of the language, and as a translator - share your take on the original language used, and how you chose the equivalent English phrases you used in your work.
Of course, since this is your work, you are more than welcome to use this in any videos, streams, etc. you like, and to monetize them as you see fit (this is probably self-evident, but I want to state it for the record, just in case).
Thank you!!
Momoshiki/Kinshiki’s Entrance
Context: Momoshiki and Kinshiki first appear in the Arena, interrupting the Chuunin exams. They begin to comment on the people in the arena, before Kinshiki engages Sasuke.
(full translation not required)
It was at this moment that the two ogres appeared in the arena.
It was plain to everyone’s eyes that these two were unknown enemies.
“Hmm…” The younger ogre had fixed his eyes onto Naruto.
Boruto couldn’t move.
It was because he was feeling something he hadn’t experienced yet: the true presence of death.
“It’s this one…” The young ogre’s were darker than thre river styx, “This one holds the strongest and biggest chakra in this seed-plot. If we recover it, we should be able to plant the Divine Tree again…”
Insights requested:
What term is used for Ogre? Oni, or something that implies a Western-style ogre or demon?
What term is used for Seed-plot? Is it analogous to “garden?”
Momoshiki / Kinshiki explain the Chakra Fruit / Cinnabar Pills.
Context: after skirmishing with Sasuke and destroying parts of the arena, Boruto fires a volley of ninjutsu from his scientific ninja tool gauntlet. Momoshiki absorbs them all. This conversation happens moments afterwards.
(full translation not required)
“I am Ootsutsuki Momoshiki.” The younger ogre gave his name.
“I’m Ootsutsuki Kinshiki.” The giant ogre gave his name as well. He had a thundering voice.
“What are you after?!”
“We only want to start over what Ootsutsuki Kaguya, who used to be in this seedplot, failed to carry out.”
“That being retrieving the scattered chakra by gathering it into one fruit.“
The ogres had given their objective.
Insights requested:
Is the term “Ogre” used the same as the one above?
Is the term “seedplot” used the same as the one above?
Momoshiki / Kinshiki prepare to launch the amplified 8-Tails Bijuudama
Context: moments after the above, Momoshiki has rained a firestorm down on Naruto, and now seeks to conclude the fight.
(full translation not required)
Annoyance.
That one word was what Momoshiki was feeling.
He could see that the people of this star were practically using the chakra that Kaguya had left behind in their own way.If it had been the people of any other star, then they would’ve been annihilated with his first blow. It didn’t amuse him for these ones to cause him so much trouble.
…..
A large clump of energy appeared from Momoshiki’s left hand.
It was the Tailed Beast Bomb he’d inhaled from the Eight Tails.
It had been amplified several times over, to the point that it now looked like a comet that foretold their ruin.
That ominous light dominated everything.
Insights requested:
Is it safe to assume that “this star” refers to Planet Earth? What is the specific word used in Japanese?
What is the word used for “comet?” Could it be “houkiboushi” or “suisei?”
Could you please elaborate on the phrasing used for “dominated everything?”
Naruto wakes up in Momoshiki’s “Dimension.”
Context: This is the very beginning of Chapter 5.
Please translate the following passage in full:
Naruto was inside darkness.
He didn’t think they’d gotten very far from the village of Konohagakure, but, rather than saying this was some place he didn’t remember, it’d be more accurate to say this was a parallel world.
It was terribly cold, and distortions rippled through the sky. It plainly wasn’t the airspace of his own world.
Kaguya had held the power of sending people into parallel worlds too… Is this something like a kekkai, or a subspace?
About half of it looked like the second-hand knowledge he had of the games his son played, but this place shouldn’t be all that different from his own world.
Naruto’s movements were hindered.
He was physically restrained. He quickly realised he was bound to a pillar.
Please provide your insight on the following:
Inside Darkness - is this accurate, or would it be more correct to say, “surrounded by darkness?”
Place / Parallel World / Kekkai / Subspace / World - for each of these terms, please identify the specific word in Japanese that is used, as well as any nuances between each term. Specifically, I’m trying to understand if we, as readers, are meant to interpret this space that Naruto is now in, as:
A planet, somewhere in the universe - the same “Main Universe” that Konoha exists in
A “subspace” within the universe, analogous to Kamui or Gamahyoro (for context, Gamahyoro is the jutsu where Jiraiya goes inside a “dimension” inside a small frog gourd. He pulls one of the paths of Pain into the dimension. It’s described as a “barrier space.”)
A completely different, parallel universe, like a Branching Timeline in Marvel
…or perhaps it’s more ambiguous or open to interpretation?
What term is used for “pillar?” Is there any chance it could be a Divine Tree, or could it be a different object?
Momoshiki consumes Kinshiki
Context: Kinshiki has resigned to sacrifice himself. He unleashes a flurry of attacks at the Gokage, etc. then allows himself to be absorbed by Momoshiki.
Please translate the following passage in full:
The colour of his flesh changed. Chakra spurted out from all over his body.
“From the very beginning, this star was the our Ootsutsuki’s seedplot!” He yelled, “Come now, the time for all the chakra to be eaten has come!”
He was truly an ogre.
Those who would eat the soul of someone who’d been like a father couldn’t be anything other than an ogre.
That was their law.
Momoshiki, who had passed from being an ogre into a comrade-eating fiend and transformed into a inhumane demon, began to suck in the chakra from his surroundings.
He was even draining the chakra that was beyond the parallel dimension he’d made. Sasuke could clearly see the stream with his rinnegan.
It could mean only one thing.
“Don’t tell me he’s…!”
“Aa. He plans to indiscriminately eat up all of this star’s chakra.”
They couldn’t allow such a thing to happen.
This wasn’t a problem of scrambling for the bijuu anymore.
This was a question of whether mankind who lived on this star would be able to greet tomorrow.
Please provide clarification on the following:
Should the term “star” be “planet?”
Is the use of “seedplot” consistent with the previous usage?
When Momoshiki is “sucking in the chakra from his surroundings,” - what exactly is happening, here? Is this just emphasizing how much chakra he received from Kinshiki, or is he actually absorbing chakra from the Shinobi present - or from “nature,” e.g. the natural energy of the planet, a nearby star, etc? This prase in particular is very confusing.
For beyond the parallel dimension he’d made:
Should we interpret this as Momoshiki having created the current planet/dimension/universe the characters are located at?
If so, should we interpret this e.g. as an act of Momo constructing/building/spawning the Space, or would it be more appropriate to say, he’s referring to the fact that he made the dimension INTO his seedplot? (I believe he and Kaguya use similar terms to refer to making a garden out of Earth or other planets by planting Shinju seeds)
What is the phrase used for “parallel dimension,” and how does it compare to the ones used at the start of the chapter?
What is intended by “beyond?” Is Momoshiki somehow pulling chakra into this dimension from “Earth” / the “main Naruto Dimension?” Where is the chakra coming from?
Is “stream” accurate? Is there any insight into where this stream is coming from —> going to?
For mankind who lived on this star: is this referring to Naruto and co. surviving the fight in general? Or perhaps Humanity itself surviving the Ohtsutsuki?
